Results, 18th Annual (2013)Stew Perry Topband Distance Challenge
Boring Amateur
Radio Club – K7RAT
The 18th running of the Stew Perry Topband Distance Challenge was held on December 28th and 29th, 2013. In general – conditions seemed pretty good – but the number of QSOs between Europe and North America continued to be depressed. There were very few – if any – QSOs made between Europe and the West coast of the USA. Activity from Japan is still not up to the same levels as the CQ 160 or CQ WW contest, but there was good activity from “down under” to help with some of those 30+ point QSOs.
Propagation between the USA East and West coast was actually very good. Many signals were S9 plus. These QSOs count for either 8 or 9 points – and helped stations on either coast keep ahead of some of the stations in the middle of the country.
The top two high power stations are the same two we had last year – except they swapped places. This year – Al, CE1/K7CA, did not have as good of propagation as he enjoyed last year – and as a result – Michel, FM5CD, had the highest single-op score. Michel was able to combine his strong coverage of the USA with some pretty good results from Europe. Battling it out in the USA high power category was Eric (NO3M), Victor (K1LT) and Tree (N6TR operating as K7RAT). These three scores ended up within 100 points of each other with Eric coming out on top. It is good to know that the USA West coast can compete against the more Eastern stations as a result of the distance scoring. Steve, N2IC, will no doubt submit that being in the middle puts one at a disadvantage as their average point total per QSO is less than those on either coast.
An interesting pattern was noticed while watching the log checking process. Due to the multiplier for working QRP and LP stations – some scores grew from their claimed score by some 33 percent! This dramatic difference was primarily enjoyed by the high power stations operating in North America. While many stations in North America were able to work 30 or more QRP stations – most of the stations in other parts of the world – including Europe - were unable to work more than 10. However, low power scores were one area Europeans were able to capitalize on – as low power contacts with a North American station were often worth more than 25 points – and were quite possible. One place that seems to be left out of this benefit would be the far away stations in the Southern Hemisphere. If you look at the three VK6 stations that submitted logs – each only worked one low power station and ZERO QRP stations appeared in their logs. This likely prompted the soapbox comment from VK6VZ – where he feels “W1BB was the doyen of intercontinental 160m DX and I don't think the expression 'QRP' was in his vocabulary.” However, we must remember that with good conditions – it is still possible to win this contest from the Southern Hemisphere. CE1/K7CA has done it as well as VK6VZ. However, we agree it is probably more difficult for them to pull it off against the QRP and LP multiplier that helps inflate the scores of North American stations.
The Boring Amateur Radio Club is not sure there is a problem here that needs fixing or not. We would like to hear more input from the participants about this issue. As a result of your input – the decision was made to reduce the multiplier for the QRP or LP station slightly a few years back. This made it harder for stations in those categories to “win” the contest overall. However, there still seems to be lot of activity in those categories. Perhaps people just like getting on and knowing they are giving more points to the people that work them.
We apologize for these results being late to press. When it was time to do the 2014 results – it was realized that the 2013 results were not fully finished. The scores and plaque listings were available – just not the full write-up including the soapbox.

CW is a hard operating
mode for me as a person with no melodies feeling. In every other contest I use
the Reverse Beacon Network to help me with the calls. Afther
a couple off hours i got so
tired I started faling asleep. Every time hearing the
same calls, so a started listen to RBN and there was action and fun again. I realy think about stopping with the Stew if there is no
assisted possible in the future. - DJ5AN
2nd time participated,
this time with vertical. Less Qs than last year, but more points and more fun.
Good to hear so many stateside stations
on topband! - DK1II
worked with about 90 watts

look at qrz.com). Cndx seemed to be more worst than
last years - DK2BJ
WAS RATHER HARD TO

Propagation not really
spectacular this year and no exotic DX worked. Spent some time reading the old
W1BB 160m bulletins from the 1950s during the contest. - DL6RAI
My first time QRP-activity
on Topband! After a last BBQ at our local radioclub and a nice meeting with local HAMs I switched
into the best-ever-noise. No idea what will be possible with very low power but
I was surprised when Thor, TF4M was getting my signal with no waiting! Two
hours later for me a time to remember:
Eric, NO3M was copying my QRP-signal after several tries for a full
contact. During the night the heating (propane) get off and without the amp we normally
use it was real cold inside so I've to go back home before sunrise for some
family activity on Sunday. HNY to all of you! And thanks Stew, W1BB for such a
great community on the best ever band! - DL7ZZ
PLEASE USE MY LOG AS A
CHECK LOG. I DID NOT HAVE TIME TO DO A
PROPER EFFORT WITH BEVERAGES, ETC. HOPE
TO TRY THIS ONE NEXT YEAR. ANTENNA USED WAS A FULL 160M DOUBLET. - EI5KF
Had fun. Tnx to all DL stations, it should be a sad contest without them
! - F5PHW
just a few hours, nice
relaxing contest. - G0DCK
I wanted to try out my new
60 foot pole and the best place was in one of the fields at Sonning
Farm The antenna worked well but I found it hard going with only 100 watts. The
main problem was the generator; with S9 of noise on the radio it made it very
difficult to copy the weak stations (I forgot to take the ferrite down to the
farm). Also the generator was not big enough to cope with the heater and the
radio station. With the temperature below freezing the radio had to be turned
off at times so the heater could warm up the back of my van. I will be operating
from home next year. Field day contests are just for the summer. - G0VQR

Running an Icom IC-7400 @ 5W QRP. Antenna on 160M is a 30m polymorph
wire (end-fed 'inverted L' to a 'vertical' to a 'sloper' and then 'top
loaded'), all from JO01. - G6CSY
In spite of what seemed
like auroral flutter on many signals, I still managed
to work some good DX which susprised me. Thanks for
all the QSOs, but many heard and not worked. I just operated until I got tired
- no energy after Christmas, but great fun as usual! Elecraft K3 5 watts, K3LC

QRP from my tiny garden is
difficult with an 8 metre high loaded inv L but I
finally made it across the pond on 5watts so special thanks to VE3TA,WF2W and
especially NO3M who caused me to wake up the kids after I shouting out
"YES!"..I bet you`ve all been there. When I lose the thrill its time to give it up. Thanks to all best 73`s Bill -

I have been participated
on this contest since the first time. I participated on LowPower
SingleOp. The condition was not good than the last year. I used transceiver 'K2

I use a k3 for a weak signal in the very heavy QRM. I use my Micro Vert Antenna which length only 3.6meters. I built it on my
balcony 2m*10m space of my condominium. I set the transmitting speed of my
electronics keyer upper 20 wpm. I like my Micro Veret Antenna for my top band equipment! - JE1SPY

Drove out to station in
the dark to work the first hour of the contest. Found antenna SWR was high.
When daylight broke, I saw one of two tophat wires on
my vertical was disconnected. Made do with a non-resonant antenna for the rest
of
the contest. Score is down a bit from last year,
although the QSO count is almost the same. (Worked only 7 JAs, vs 10 last year - that's part of the difference). Logged
CE1/K7CA for 30 points (60 for him). Didn't complete a Q with KV4FZ or FM5CD

My second 160 Test this
year after being away 15 years or so. It
was loads of fun. Also my second antenna this year this one is much better. It is an Inv-L with raised radials about 75
feet vertical and 75 horizontal and 90 foot radials. Hope I see all again! -

We will be in the running
for the longest QSO plaque K6ND <> VK6VZ Great contest, everything went
very smooth. The antenna work we did on Christmas day - K6ND
Pretty poor conditions, as
usual I never heard any EU stations, nor JA.
Very difficult from here. But KH6
and KL7 are very easy. Was very
surprised to hear the HD2 very loud and got him on the second call, which was
my best DX. The CE1 was in the noise zone and almost impossible to copy so no
luck with him. The east coast was very
weak and most were difficult to copy.
The "L" was just as effective for listening as the loop, which
is unusual for here. Fortunately the
local noise was low during the contest. FT-1000MP AL-80b @ 500-700w Inverted L

100% S&P again this
year. QRV about 10 hours total with about 150 Q's. Maybe the Q rate would be
better if I were in the midwest, but the well gets
dry - K7FL
My first QRP Stew! I just
could not seem to be heard at the beginning and end of the contest - it was
looking pretty grim at the outset! I attribute it to noisy band conditions
around sunset and sunrise and my QRP signal. Things picked up later in the
night, and I was able to make a few runs, even though I was QRP! Best DX was
KH6AT and KH6LC. Missed DX was CE1/K7CA, KV4FX, HD2RAE, FM5CD, RA0FF, KH7Y,
JA3YBK and several other JAs, VK6VZ and one other VK. It did seem that
conditions were down a bit from prior years. I didn't seem to hear as much DX
as in past years. The new KX3 performed very well at 5W and did not miss a beat
even when connected to W7GNP's full-sized 160m vertical. Thanks to all who took
the time to dig out my itty bitty E-field from the plethora of competitors on
the airwaves! Rig: KX3 @ 5W Antenna: grounded shunt fed full size vertical (TX
and RX) Thanks to W7GNP at Horned Toad Acres for being a great host! - K7NU
Operated my home
station from 1500 miles away. The first time I have ever operated a major
contest remote. Eveything worked flawless. Would have like to have a bit more experience
with the station remote operation as the score might have been a bit better. Highlight
of the evening was just before the end of the contest when VK6 answered my cq. HNY to all. -

My antennas are worse than
yours. A bad antenna has infinite gain over no antenna. I consider this an 80%
success because I showed up. Offending Big Stew

KQ2RP
My first time in the Stew
Perry. I have perhaps the smallest 160m antenna – a Valor PHF160B mobile whip,
on a triple magmount on the metal roof of my 24x56 foot
mobilehome. The magmount is
tied into a radial field lying on the metal roof, which is shared with four
other mag mounts covering the rest of the HF ham
bands. Any contact on 160 is a thrill. My best 160 DX is Hawaii on 160. I was
pleased at the coverage in the grids last night. Thanks to all who answered me!
- KQ6Q
There are several plaques
I can hope for: "Average Score" by W5GN; "Golden Log" by
KR2Q: "Big City, Little Pistol" by AA6VB (pop. is 85,000 and I ran
100W); (Since I was the pistol in 2012 perhaps someone else should get it this
year); "Top score s/o zone 4" by W0RI; "LONGEST QSO
(ce1/k7ca)" by TF4M. - KS0T
This event always amazes
me!!! It's hard to believe that I can
work so many people with 100 watts and a 27' K6MM vertical with just two radials. All I can say it that you folks have some
real great ears out there. Heard and
missed CE1, ZL, and KH6 along with a few west coast stations. But, overall, I
am amazed. I'm already waiting for next
year to do it all over again. Thanks to all of you in my log.

We had a welcome house
guest during the SP this year, so I got 285 QSOs in 6.3 hr. That's about 40 fewer than I got in 2012 and
earlier years in 9 to 10 hr., so my rate was better this year: I ran more. My best hour running was 71 QSOs, 0024-0124
Z. My rate dropped after 0211 Z so I
began tuning and found 5 EU QSOs in 3 countries 0214-0235, fewer than in other
years. I worked HD2 and CE at 0346 and
0353. After that I made some US west- coast QSOs but never heard any more EUs
or other DX, so I quit around 05 Z. - N3UM

down hill from there.
Despite trying only OK2W

Nice contest. Great conditions, best personal score. Might need a better antenna that my

Made some major changes
this year with the top band antenna/s. I removed the inverted U in the spring. I
replaced the inverted U with a "condensed" short dipole package, a
Alpha-Delta DX-LB shorty dipole for 160/80/40 at 37'
apex. I used this antenna in the ARRL 160 earlier this month, and struggled a
bit more than I thought I would have to. I ordered A W8AMZ 160m reduced half
sloper earlier in December, and this past Friday before the Stew Perry, I was
able to hoist it onto my short 37' tower. The weather broke into the upper 30's,
so decent antenna weather! I did 100% S&P during my limited 6 hours on the
band. I did a lot of A/B comparison between the antennas, and found the W8AMZ
reduced half sloper to be the big winner. Signals were consistently 15DB on
average better than the short dipole at the same apex of 37'. Never made a
contact with the DX-LB, but I did use it on occasion as a receive antenna when
the noise level crept up on the sloper. It's always hard to tell if conditions
are good or bad from my vantage point with less than optimal 160 antennas, but
it seemed like I heard the west coast louder this year than ever before, and it
was easier
to work the west coast than in years past. The
loudest "7" on the band, from about 0330UTC on, was K7RAT. No
kidding! Around 11pm local time or there abouts, the
Boring Amateur Radio Club Station was 20 over S9 with with
12DB of RX attenuation injected on the Icom
IC-756PROIII, on the sloper aimed at about 60 degrees. S9 on the Dipole! Just
threw that in just in case your handing out extra points for big receive signal
reports! Just kidding there of course, but K7RAT was that strong for a good
long time here to my location. I wished I could have operated more time, but
our oldest, serving in the Navy, was home for the holidays
and Saturday night was his
last night home before returning to base in Gulfport, MS. On a sad note, I did
not know of Tom, W8AMZ's passing earlier this month. I went up to his web site
this morning to send him a thank you for a real nicely designed, compact 160m
antenna that works great. Regrettably, I found the message one his site that he
had become a SK earlier this month. Tom will certainly be missed. I am aware
that their are many of his antenna designs out there
in use today. I am very happy to be the proud owner of one of them. Thanks
again guys for another fun Top Band contest. Looking forward to next year’s fun
already. Who knows what wires I will be playing with in my 60'X70' backyard
city lot! Working conditions: IC-756PROIII 100 watts to W8AMZ reduced half

Great contest with lots of
activity. This is the first Stew Perry 160M contest I have operated in and I
operated QRP and entirely search and pounce S&P. My compromise "up and
over and down again" inverted U of 31 feet high on one side of the yard and
14 feet on the other side of small back yard of 60 wide by 25 feet deep worked
quite well working against a dozen or so radials of various lengths. Heard lots
of Europeans, managed to be heard by a few and hear them repeat my callsign but
not well enough to complete the contact; maybe next time. - VE3GTC
We didn't do quite as well
as last year. Conditions were variable, good sometimes but poor at other times.
Even so we were able to work some good DX. One of us (VE3OSZ) has now participated

venerable Drake TR7 has also been used each year. That must be a record of some
kind. - VE3OSZ

Mobile 160 anyone? Mobile
is a lot like work on Top Band, (I don't recall it being this hard) - whew! A
few days ago I thought I had this all figured out; I would dig my HS-1800/PRO
out of the snow, put it on top of my spacious Subaru Wagon, add a coil and all
would be right with the world. I'd kick back and relax a bit, make a couple
hundred Q's and take it easy. Uh-uh. Wouldn't work. I had water or corrosion
inside the '1800 so as soon as I would mount the thing I'd sometimes get 1 or 2
spins of the motor and it would freeze and seize (-25*C here.) RATS! Enter
backup plan (grudingly, after messing with it for 3
days). Use the smaller mobile antenna on
the MINI and, THEN all would be right with the world; right? Nope! That antenna
was froze as well. I had it parked on 20m for the past few months and it wasn't
budging. Brought it into the garage, thawed it out for a few days and then put
it back on the car, but couldn't get it on 160m, even with my handy-dandy,
plastic coffee can coil inspired by W1BB/m QST cover page in the 70's.......as
an aside, I last used this very same coil atop a Webster BAndspanner
in the mid 90's enroute to VE1PZ for CQ 160m. IIRC I worked 4 or 5 countries while driving
there and back with a straight key strapped to my knee, a FT-101E and a Ford
Escort Wagon. I recall getting bit by
the metal case of the 101E, so RF was sizzlin',
hi.....This time at least the car was stationary, but able to move. Well, the
best laid plans of mice and men, I had to redo all the capacity hat wires on
top of the coil as they had mysteriously come unhooked inside the can over the
past 20 years. Imagine! Quality stuff I
tell
ya. So, I finally get it all working in the middle of a
snowstorm and leave it. Do the RAC Winter and have almost no gas left in the
tank both literally and figuratively. Do
a brief stint after the RAC, take a break, come back the car then closing in on
midnight I worry I might fall asleep in the car and suffer CO poisoning so I
leave the windows down a bit and just do short stints. Midnight.....have to go to
bed. I am beat. Get up (a little late) for EU sunrise and no matter how fast I
rev the engine I cannot get DL5AXX's attention.
He is peaking about 579.....no way to get him. SIGH. What a lovely signal. I hear SE0X calling someone and he nearly is
S9, but never hear him call CQ. W1's are no trouble. Anyone over s9 here is usually workable. The
W1's are all 20-30-40/9 so I worked pretty much all of them. MOst all 2's and 3's as well. W4's are very thin on the
ground. Surprisingly, N0NI is worked fairly early on with only a couple of repeats.
Toni has great ears !! K9NW has persistence and we take probably 20 overs to complete but he has endurance. Thanks man!! At
3:30am when I get up and out to the car I can hear K7RAT CQing.
Not sure if Tree is piloting this stn, but at times
he is loud. I mean like 589 loud, but I can't get a QRZ. Dang. Every time I tune
past I call though just in case. One time he hits S9 and after many (and I mean
MANY!!!) calls he puts my call together and we complete, probably for my best
mobile DX to the west to date and for sure during the STEW. Again, thanks a lot for your patience!!
Finally @ 4:21am I need to go back inside and back to bed. These 62 contacts in
4-5 hours were likely as hard as my 1100 in 14 hours previously in the RAC
Winter. Thanks for all the contest contacts all year long. This was my 129th this year and one of my favorites.
I try to do something a little different in this contest every time out.
Cheers, Mike VE9AA, 2009 MINI COOPER, FT-857D, SD-330 with plastic coffee can

Propagation fairly good to Stateside, summertime QRN not too bad considering a

This is the first Stew
that I've done semi-seriously for a few years. The propagation was very
strange, with huge QSB on signals at this end from both the USA and Europe.
Very little was heard from western Europe or western coastal USA. Signals would
pop out of the noise for one or two seconds, rising to S4/5 or so, then quickly
fall back into the noise. In almost 20 years of 160m operation from VK6 I've
never heard conditions like it. Almost all QSOs were 'search and pounce'. From
a DX perspective outside of Europe and North America, I'd really like to see
the QRP category go or the multiplier be largely reduced - 5W from NA (or Eu) can't be heard in the Asia/Pacific in a 160m contest
and it is impossible to tell here if a frequency is actually clear or has a NA
(or Eu) QRP station on it. For those who want to work
160m QRP in NA, there is the ARRL 160 Contest. W1BB was the doyen of intercontinental
160m DX and I don't think the expression 'QRP' was in his vocabulary. In NA,
the Stew looks sadly in danger of becoming largely an intracontinental
QRP contest. I think the great man would be confused, if not horrified. - VK6VZ

First Stew entry for me,
and also the first time staying up all night for a contest. Was disappointed in propagation - I worked
more Europeans on the night before the contest than during the contest. Still,
snagging JA and VK at my SR ended the contest on a happy note. Special thanks
to K7HP for letting me know my amp keying was defective. Most of my off-time during the contest was
spent rectifying the fault. Once again the gentlemanly behaviour
on the bands was evident all around. Nice
to hear civility in pile-ups and ops waiting for QSOs to finish before calling.
Pls keep the no-assist rule in place. It seems to really keep the LIDs away. -

Surprised at how many I worked that were right above the noise level even
