Results, 19th Annual (2014)Stew Perry Topband Distance Challenge
Boring Amateur
Radio Club – K7RAT
The 19th running of the Stew Perry Topband Distance Challenge was held on December 27th and 28th, 2014. 712 logs were submitted and activity was strong with 1500 different stations showing up in multiple logs.
Conditions continued to suffer due to the sunspot peak holding on. However, the increase in activity seemed to offset the poor conditions and help produce some pretty high QSO totals even if the average number of points per QSO were down. It is gratifying to see lots of new blood – with at least 26 “first timers” going after the First Time plaque and even a few people saying this was their first CW contest!!
The highest score belonged to Milt Jensen – N5IA operating in very Western New Mexico using the high power category. Milt leveraged his 538 QSOs and a higher than average points per QSO to edge out the competition. The QRP score from Stan, K5GO, took advantage of the QRP multiplier and produced the second highest score. Jim, W0UO chose the lower power category and had the third highest score. All of these scores are within 10 percent of each other – which seems to support the current power multipliers in the rules.
In Europe – the scores were generally lower than the ones in the USA. The highest score was generated by Doug Turnbull, EI2CN using the high power category. Serge, UA6LFQ led Europe in the low power category and Stewart, GM4AFF had the highest QRP score. The most probable reason the Europeans struggled to post higher scores was due to the low percentage of North American QSOs in their logs. With the upcoming improvement in conditions – Europe should be able to tap into those QSOs better and improve their scores.
In the rest of the world – you can quickly find the bigger scores by seeing a low QSO total mixed in with the higher scores. VK3IO made the most of his 55 QSOs by making 50 of them with other continents. He also picked up the plaque for the longest distance QSO by working VE1ZZ. V55V was piloted by DL3DXX and only worked two stations on his continent. Finally, HC2AO entered the low power category taking advantage of the 1.5 times multiplier. He only had three QSOs with South America and averaged just over 16 points for each QSO he made. The highest score from Asia came from JH4UYB who had a good balance of QSOs from North America, Europe and Oceania in his 61 QSOs.
One amazing accomplishment was made by Mike, W9RE, who has always had a good reputation for his “ears” and logging accuracy. Mike made 601 QSOs and except for his 13 dupes – no other score deductions were made. He easily wins the “Golden Log” for the highest error free. Other Golden Logs with at least 100 QSOs were submitted by VE3KI, NW2K, N7GP, AA9D, OG6N, 9A7DX, W1TO, N8LJ, N6TV, W2LE, IZ3GNG, N3KN, N9CK, WJ9B, KI0I, WA1UJU, K9CW, DJ3RA, DK6SP, OK1JOC, LA5LJA, AD8J, DK5DQ, N8EA, K1GU and VE3OSZ. The Topband is certainly a challenge when it comes to error free copy – so all of you have done a great job!!
The 20th Stew Perry Topband Distance Challenge will take place on December 26/27, 2015. As I type that sentence – I find myself somewhat in disbelief. This contest was started in the fertile breeding ground for contests that the internet has helped created. The founding fathers bounced around ideas in email and came up with the basic format for the “perfect” 160 meter contest. My memory is vague on who they all were at this point, but obviously what was created had legs and is still gaining new converts. This is likely the longest running contest that has used the internet to get started and with log submission totals approaching 1000 logs, perhaps the most popular. Ward, N0AX, has dubbed it a “Top Band tradition” in his soapbox comment. Maybe he will write a Topband for Dummies book someday?
I need to acknowledge the work that Lew Sayre, W7EW / W7AT, has done keeping this event going for twenty years. The enthusiasm that he brings to the plaque portion of this contest is infectious and is a significant contributor to the activity level. The day is coming when Lew will have sent out his 1000th plaque – which might be something that only the ARRL and CQ can top. However, Lew’s work would not be possible without those of YOU who sponsor the plaques and support the effort. Without these funds, the plaque program would not exist. Another significant contribution by YOU is the fresh ideas for plaques that spur the imagination of the participants and encourage their activity.
Another contribution to the contest was recently made by Bruce Horn, WA7BNM, who generated the web page where you can type your log and get it submitted. This was used by 25 participants.
This event has had some impact on the other 160 meter contests. One of them has toyed with the idea of adopting distance scoring. I have been asked a couple of times to re-score the contest using an estimated distance formula based upon the callsigns. Maybe someday – you will see two sets of numbers for these contests – one using the existing scoring method and one using a distance based method. Recently – the CQ 160 contest added a rule to allow remote receiving locations up to 100 kM for some of their categories. This sounds like the “ZL6QH” rule that was pioneered in the Stew rules many years ago. When I attend conventions – I occasionally get comments about the famous “Rule 6”. In fact – I have seen one contest copy that rule.
Remember to submit your logs as soon as possible after the event via email to tbdc@kkn.net or tbdc@contesting.com (they both end up at the same place). The Stew Web page is where to look for more information about the contest – such as the full rules and results of all of the events – www.kkn.net/stew. If you are interested in a report on how your log was checked – send an email to tree@kkn.net and I will send one back to you.

I do not recall worse
conditions in any SPDC in recent memory.
The SPDC is challenging and fun in any case and I squeezed in what time
that I had available to operate. I ran
very simply, with the K3 at 100-watts and used the antenna tuner to extend the
bandwidth of my 56-ft tee-loaded folded monopole. Aside from fresh ground
coffee, I had no other help of any kind. Propagation was poor in general, with
only two EU worked and no KH6 or KL7.
One steller exception in generally poor
conditions was spotlight propagation from VK3IO. Working Ron was a real thrill
and easily my best DX. - AB4I
Didn't operate as much as
I had planned but still had fun. Thanks to all the good ops that pulled my weak

Please use my log as check

to bad only 2 US in the log. - DJ8OG
The condx
seemed to be below normal. Heard only K1LZ vy weak on
this side of the ocean in the morning. Because of new snow and freezing during
the night it was difficult to tune the antenna. So I stopped contesting. I Made
the time contesting with 90W into my big homebuild
magnetic loop. View a picture of this antenna at DK2BJs Page at QRZ(dot)

Hi Guys, my first time in
the Stew Perry. The antenna was a halfwave dipole at
30ft sloping to 6ft each end. Radio was my Yaesu
FT857D running 10 watts Only and the shack was my car. The dipole was assembled
during the contest, in fact on a remote hill in the New Forest, Hampshire, UK
after the contest had started, 22:00Z in the dark and with -2 degree
temperature it was a very cold night in the car but worth it. Thanks to everyone
who pulled my signal from the noise and to K3WW who stuck with me and made it
into my log, amazing. - G0URR
Who turned the band off ?
One of the poorer SPs in terms of conditions for some while. The US was very
weak generally, with far fewer QSOs "over the pond" than usual. Sadly
static rain was again present for a while, and overall the rate (and score) is
way down on previous years. But the SP is a great contest - see you all in SP

I have been participated
on this contest since the first time. I participated on LowPower
SingleOp. The condition was very poor than the last year. I used transceiver
'K2 & K3 & FT1000D' on this contest. I use a K2 for watch a very weak
signal. I use a k3 for a weak signal in the very heavy QRM. I use a FT1000D for
a spped watch. I use my Micro Vert
Antenna which length only 3.6 meters. I built it on my balcony 2m*10m space of
my condominium. I set the transmitting speed of my electronics keyer upper 20 wpm. I like my Micro Veret

First time in Stew Perry
Topband Distance Challenge! Worked QRP (5 W) into a temporary 3-meter long
mobile antenna whip designed for 160 meters with a quarter-wavelength
counterpoise stretched across the lawn of a suburban home just outside
Rochester, NY. Band was noisy when first listening around 0000 UTC (Dec. 28),
but then it settled down around 0300 UTC, when I finally made a contact. It was
challenging and fun! - K2BCM

K3CCR is the club station
at the Collington retirement community in FM 18. For
the 2014 Stew Perry, ops N3UM and K3DI agreed that N3UM would run nearby
stations early in the evening and K3DI would look for high-point-value DX QSOs
later. Starting at 21Z N3UM made QSOs out to a several hundred miles. Later
there were VE3s and plenty of US stations east of the Rockies, but none west of
there. Only "DX" was VI! No EU
stations were heard. It was possible to run at moderate rates until 0216
Z. Coming in after that, K3DI made some
west-coast-US QSOs and some in the Caribbean with high point value (P4, HI,
NP2), but no EU QSOs. In the recent ARRL
160 m. the same op (K3DI) with the same station made 8 EU QSOs in 7 countries,
with propagation we thought good but not great. So, for us in FM18, 160 m. DX
propagation in the Stew was poor. - K3CCR
Band conditions were disturbed

what is possible with 100 watts and a 27' K6MM vertical & two radials. Lots of rain static here; but, other than
that, things went very smooth for me.

other folks working them. No RX antenna

A good shakedown cruise
for the station on 160. Most effective
antenna combination turned out to be the top-loaded tower vertical on transmit
and an extended double Zepp on receive. Using a tribander
for receive also worked OK as a receive antenna. Well, maybe not quite so OK as I didn't hear
anything from EU, KL7, KH6, or JA. So
that's something to work on for next year as the solar cycle shifts into lower
gears. Nevertheless, I was working many
weak stations and getting through pileups, so it may just have been high-flux
conditions. This is a good model for a
low-band contest with the right scoring and exchange. The novel plaque program also stimulates
interest and activity to the point where this is now a Top Band tradition! 73, Ward - N0AX

Yes – the K7RAT station
was not very loud this time around. L I found myself between QTHs and my original plan to
use the Boring one via remote control was shot down a couple of days before the
contest. I found myself in a house on
half an acre in a very unfriendly place for antennas. They complain if you leave your trash cans
out too long. However, I was determined
to get on the air and give out some QSOs.
Went to hardware store and figured out the cheapest way to get a half
wave of wire was to buy small speaker wire and peel the two conductors
apart. I used RG6 for the coax. The house was next to some open area – so I
was able to string a low dipole – that was basically full size. The apex of the antenna was on top of a short
flagpole – that was on the 2nd story of the house (up about 20
feet). The antenna went up just after
sunset so nobody could see it. It came
down before sunrise. The noise level was pretty high – as I hadn’t discovered
which lights in the house to turn off to quiet things down. My last handicap was that I did not have any
high current power supplies with me and the most I could run the K3 at was
about 3.5 watts using a bench supply.
This actually ended up being a pretty balanced situation as I could only
hear the louder local stations – who were the only ones who hear me. Best DX was the Southern tip of California.
This operation was the inspiration for the “same day” antenna plaque – which
seemed to motivate a few others to get on in the contest. Perhaps this is a good plaque to keep in the
mix. I am happy to announce that the
K7RAT signal is now back on the air at a new QTH and should be fairly close to
the old one for the next event. – N6TR

Our oldest boy, who just
left the Navy this past summer and who lives in MS, decided to surprise us with
a visit Saturday and Sunday! So that very nice surprise translated into much
less time to play in the SP! Great to see number one boy during the holidays :)
I decided to give Qrp a try for the first time ever
on 160. It was more like Qrpp with limited space
antenna (W8AMZ reduced half sloper at 35'). Although quite the challenge, I had
a great time! Kept expanding my goals along the way. Once I hit 100 Q's I was
hoping to work at least 100 different grids. Missed that goal though. I heard
KV4FZ with a fabulous signal for the 6 hours I was playing, but could never get
his attention other than an occasional ??/agn agn. Also focused a bit more on making sure I didn't bust a
call or report. Sure will be nice if I have a clean log! Seemed like
propagation to west, for me, was mostly SW. Worked a few "7s" in AZ
and the only CA worked was in a SW grid CM97 from me. Never heard any stations
to the NW cost grids this year. By around 3am local the activity level seemed
to have dropped off quite a bit and west coast stations that were heard were
now fading into my qsb. So about 7 minutes after 3am
I logged my last contact of the contest and called it SP 2014, and qsyed to bed. I had a lot of fun as always. CU in 2015!
Working conditions Icom 756PROIII turned down to 4.5
watts to a 67' half sloper at an apex of 35' aimed about 60 degrees. Big thanks
to all that heard my puny signal and got me into your log, that will be extra
points for you!! 73 Gene - N9TF
Single Op, wire antenna
less than 50 ft. high, Search and Pounce only.
This first time effort was as a single op, low power output into a 204
ft. dipole at less than 25 ft. height. It used to be a G5RV Max, but I added a 1:1
balun at the ladder line feed point and now just call
it a dipole. RG-8x from the tuner and it functions fairly well from 1800 khz to 1845 khz. Will not tune
above that. Wasn't doing very well to begin with, that is, until I realized my
power out was at about 10 watts. After turning it up I did better with slightly
less than 100 watts output. - NF8U

This was my first Stew
Perry contest. For me a mix between 'DXing' and
contesting. Like in the 'old days' when you scanned the VHF bands, now on 160m.
It sometimes felt like calling CQ on 23cm during SHF-contests here in Europe,
and scrape the band to look for new points. Conditions were poor and activity
was low IMHO. It was fun but I have mixed feelings about participating a next
time. 73, Remco - PA3FYM

MOBILE MOBILE
MOBILE We went to see the HOBBIT movie tonight and
when I got home I was all pumped to get out on the battlefield, but as it
turned out I was much more a halfling than an Orc. I was definitely
getting run over and condx in the car were punk. I
had spent the better part of the afternoon trying to get the SD-330 resonating
on 160m again this winter but the lowest it would go with the Folgers
coffee-can addition was 2.693kHz. Too
high. After much deliberation I finally hauled out the trusty and crusty
HS-1800/pro antenna, but again, even with its longer whip and built in cap hat
the lowest it would go was 1924kHz. Methinks something was rotten in my
coffee-can coil. One of the strands must
have gotten broken this summer as it got beat around the garage, so I added
quite a few top hat radials made of #22awg copper. The only way to get it below 1900 was to get
them close to the cars roof too. Kinda looked like
Wile-E-Coyote's umbrella just after an ACME bomb had exploded and he was left
with only wires and no material on his umbrella. Anyways, the W1's were mostly
"easy" to work by the time I got on approaching midnight, but they
were few and far between. Waited too late. I did hear EI2CN many times as I
tuned across. There was one time he
peaked nearly 5NN and I managed to get VE9U? from him twice, but he vanished
and I never heard from him again. He
vanished. SIGH. The cross-pond DX that
never was ! Later, with lots of patience
though, NP2X put me in the log. Kudos. My favorite QSO and perhaps best ODX was
with Milt N5IA. He called me as I CQ'd high in the band where the SWR was
"reasonable" on the conglomeration I called an antenna. If you are reading this, you were an honest
519....but I have no idea how you heard me.
All the heavy lifting was on your end !!! In the morning before SR,
after my 3 hour "nap" the SWR was resonant somewhere below 160m due
to freezing rain. I didn't want to knock the ice off the wires as they are very
small and brittle. When I tried that
last year things went flying in all directions, as fishing line insulating
strings broke so I left it. I could operate 1800-1830 fairly well. Not many
above that anyways approaching Sunrise. The modus operand I was to S&P and
make note of those who couldn't hear and come back to them later. This sounded like a good, but seldom worked
out well. QSB meant only on extreme peaks could anyone outside VE1 or W1 hear
me. Then I would CQ very high or low in
the band. I actually did have perhaps 10
stns all evening/morning call me. My mobile top hat is off to you fellas ! The SWR seemed wide this year (way too wide for a
mobile) and the 9 loading top hat wires were closer to cars roof to get
resonance, so no doubt I had a beautiful resonant cct
up there, but very lossy. Whoever worked me deserves the points ! My
antenna was a giant resonant *(but not radiating) circuit ! I am happy to
report most stations do hear quit well and don't give up vy
easy. If they were within 1000-1500 miles
I generally worked them. (W1/2/3 upper W4). Most anyone above a 559 was
workable but there was a couple specific W1's that were 5NN for hours that I
could not even get a QRZ from. That's
the way it goes when you are likely emitting millwatts!

Very low activity in
VK/ZL/Pacific area here with low activity, which is typical, as this dx challenge does not interest many down here, except for

My first time to enter
this contest and I did not realize that no spotting cluster use is
allowed. I did not work anyone as a
result of pouncing on a spot, because there weren't any. However, I spotted
about 20 or 25 stations I worked and, seeing no other spots, it dawned on me
that perhaps using the Cluster was not allowed.
So, I turned off the Cluster and continued without it. So, I am submitting my log as a check
log. Next year, I'll remember to read
the rules first. Lots of great ops and a few show-offs who would rather send
their report 15 or 20 times at 36 wpm in poor conditions, than slow down a bit
and get it through in far fewer tries- W0YR

some of the worst band conditions in many years. It didn't seem to matter whether it was NE or
West, absorption was the by-word for the weekend. EU was actually best at the beginning and
went downhill with a very minor peak at EU sunrise. No northern or eastern EU were heard or
worked. Likewise, conditions to the west
coast were dismal. There seemed to be an
RF wall....very few WA, OR, CA and no VE7. Our longest QSO was VK3IO who made
many serious entrants happy by calling in.
The most interesting contact was V55V ... out only AF. It was a weekend of spotlight propagation and
not necessarily with a spotlight on our neighborhood. We listened to K1LZ working EU stations we
could not hear...but they were struggling too...being just that much closer to
EU made the difference. Our overall QSO
total of 598 was competitive, but the lack of EU and those 8 point West
Coasters was evident in the final score.
We started the contest with just a few operators but it got better as
the night progressed. TNX to those who
came out for TBDC - W2GD
Always fun for the
Holidays to spend part of it with friends.
Band conditions seemed down but as always we hope that all had a lot of
fun of the Top Band. Look forward to
seeing all of you in the next go round.
Best for the New Year 2015.

Noisy conditions in
NNY. Thanks for the QSOs. TS570S to an inverted L. 73, Chris WB9G - WB9G
IN THE BEGINNING OF THE
CONTEST I COULD NOT FIGURE WHY NO ONE WAS COMING BACK TO MY CALLS. COULD IT BE
THE RADIO BLEW UP? WAS THE COAX CONNECTED? THE REALPROBLEM WAS I HOOKED UP TO
MY LOW ANGLE OF RADIATION WIRE, AND NOT MY CLOUD WARMER LOW 160M HALF WAVE
DIPOLE. CHANGE THE ANTENNA SWITCH... STATIONS CAME BACK TO MY CALLS. CONDITIONS
WERE NOT THE BEST. MANY STATIONS IGNORED LOW POWER STATIONS. HAD FUN. SEE YA'LL
NEXT YEAR ON THE CLOUD WARMER. - WD5BJT
Stew Perry is my favorite
holiday activity, just not as much fun this time...but there is 2015 coming up!
