Topband Distance Challenge
Boring Amateur
Radio Club – K7RAT
The 20th running of the Stew Perry Topband Distance Challenge was held on December 26th and 27th, 2015. 806 logs were submitted, almost 100 more than last year and activity was strong with over 1500 active stations showing up in multiple logs.
The contest started with ominous conditions. While some Japan stations were worked from the West Coast of the USA before the starting bell – by the time the contest started – there was no longer any propagation between Japan and North America. Typically – the West Coast enjoys getting an early lead on the East Coast (and Europe) by working a dozen or so Japanese stations. These QSOs have a value of about 16 points each (or 32 points if you are lucky enough to work a low power station).
Conditions did not seem much better in Europe either ---- and when the sun finally set again in the Western USA – it was clear that the band was broken. There is typically a peak at sunset where the East coast stations can be easily worked – but only stations West of the Mississippi were making it to the West Coast at sunset.
However, the band slowly recovered as time went on – and by 0600Z – things were almost starting to sound normal. However, this is after the prime time opening between North American and Europe – so many QSO opportunities just never happened. The Japanese signals returned to the band during the last hours of the contest and even some low power QSOs took place between North America and Japan.
Clearly – the best place to have been for a competitive score was the Northeast corner of North America. The top four scores in the Single-operator, high power category all came from this area of the world. Congrats to Dennis Egan, W1UE who posted the highest single-op high power score with over 4000 points. The next four scores all had over 3000 points. The fifth place score came from the opposite corner of the USA and belonged to Milt, N5IA. Milt had the top high power score in 2015. Sadly, this was Milt’s last Stew Perry contest and he became a silent key in June after a tower fall. His signal and his ears will be missed on Topband.
John, W2ID, in his soapbox comment wondered if some kind of “really good ears” award could be issued based upon how many times a callsign shows up as the best DX for the stations in the score listing. It is an interesting idea. Looking at this – stations that are far away from population centers seem to show up pretty often. NP2X has the most listings as best DX with 44. KH6LC has 28 and CW5W has 18. N0NI has the most for USA stations with 29 and West Coast stations N5IA (26) and K7RAT (24) right behind. While being listed frequently here likely does mean you have good ears – there are probably people who also have good ears who are not listed as often due to their location. Maybe some kind of average distance with QRP stations might provide a good indicator – but that will still have a lot of do with you location.
I need to acknowledge the work that Lew Sayre, W7EW / W7AT, has done keeping this event going for twenty years. The enthusiasm that he brings to the plaque portion of this contest is infectious and is a significant contributor to the activity level. The day is coming when Lew will have sent out his 1000th plaque – which might be something that only the ARRL and CQ can top. However, Lew’s work would not be possible without those of YOU who sponsor the plaques and support the effort. Without these funds, the plaque program would not exist. Another significant contribution by YOU is the fresh ideas for plaques that spur the imagination of the participants and encourage their activity.
Due to the way Christmas and New Year’s fall in 2016, the event will jump up into the weekend before Christmas and be held on December 17th.
Remember to submit your logs as soon as possible after the event via email to tbdc@kkn.net or tbdc@contesting.com (they both end up at the same place). The Stew Web page is where to look for more information about the contest – such as the full rules and results of all of the events – www.kkn.net/stew. If you are interested in a report on how your log was checked – send an email to tree@kkn.net and I will send one back to you.
Check out the Soapbox section following the score listings for some good stories. And now – what you have been waiting for – the plaque listing!!

I was away at a relative's
house in Virginia (FM19) for a family Christmas celebration, and decided to
toss a 40-foot tall "T" wire into a tree in order to make a few QSOs
in the Stew. I added eight short radials on the ground in the dark, matched the
antenna with a tuner in the shack, and got on the air with 100 watts and no
receive antenna. My part time S&P
effort netted 70 QSOs but no DX, although I did hear KV4FZ and K7CA. It was a blast to operate in the Stew again
after a long absence. 73 Walt in FM19

It was so hard to copy
most of the stations taking 5 mins or more to get all
the details. I put up a a 60
foot vertical with a 1/4 wave on it thinking it would outperform the dipole. It
turned out the dipole outperformed the vertical by 2 or 3 S points even with
the DX stations. Managed to work 5 or 6 USA and Canadian
stations close to sunrise on Sunday morning. I thought I did not stand a
chance getting across the pond. It must have been the other stations with the
big and high antennas doing all the work. Great fun, see you next year - G0VQR
The band looked promising
with an opening to the US between 2120 and 2200 but my SR peak between 0700 and
0800 didn't really take off.
Many US stations found
copying my call and grid hard going. My noise level was high due to rain on
electricity grid lines. Good fun though. K3, Expert 1.3K-FA amplifier, 160m

W3GB and N3UM finished putting up a new T ant. for 160 m just a few days
before the 2015 Stew Perry: a 55-ft. vertical wire and a 100-ft. top-load wire,
with 8 of a planned 16 61-ft. radials laid on ground or slightly buried. So, we
were eager to see how well the T worked.
Only N3UM was available to operate. Began just before
21 Z, running. First 3-point Q was at 2140, first 4-pointer at 2241.
Rate was 50/hr until 2212Z, then jumped to 67/hr for 85 min. A 10-min BK; then
tuned and found EI2CN for 11
points at 2349, first EU. After that, run or tune, the rate
dropped: 40 Qs 00-01Z, 49 Qs 01-02, 18 to 27/hr in the last 4 BIC hrs. But, got 6 more EUs at 14 to 18 points each:
2 OKs, DL, SN, UW, and RW7. RW was the
18 pts, best DX at 9000 km. Got only 3 6-pt. Qs (KV4, NP2, DM52 (AZ or NM)) and
2 7-pt. Qs (Martinique and DM37 (UT)).

It was definitely worth
being up for the start of this contest Saturday morning for the hour or so the
band was still 'ON'. This year I finally
entered into the "if you can hear 'em you can
work 'em" zone having a slightly better antenna
than last year (I have a remote tuner at the base so I can put my whopping 300w
right at the feedline). As was the case last year, Top Band operators
seem to be cut from a finer, more considerate cloth; thank you for your
patience and persistence. Happy Holidays

This was my first entry in
Stew Perry Topband Distance Challenge, and it was a lot of fun. I finally broke
down and bought a QSK amplifier and it was a delight to hear neither relay clatter nor fan noise the entire time. This also was
the first contest outing for my 160M sloper and it acquitted itself reasonably
well. I heard but could not work stations in Nevada and USVI, but pretty much
everyone else I could hear, I could work. Thanks to all for the QSOs! - KC2LST

night time operation. QRN, QRN, QRN !!!!! And poor conditions to go with it. I
apologize to all those whom I could not hear or copy. My busted rate is going to be real high this
year due to the number of repeats. I had
to get repeats for many call signs. I
had to get repeats for many more exchanges.
I don't understand why a great number of operators will send the
exchange only one time after having to ask for their call sign 3-4 times. And then they send it only one time after
being asked to send it again. Read conditions folks. Listen to how the operator you are calling is
working. If he is having a difficult
time getting your call sign on 3, 4, or 5 repeats, then how is he going to copy
your grid square on one quick over?
Well, enough soapbox. It was a
learning experience. Looking forward to the next one.

Late
start, after 8pm local time. Thunderstorms training just to my south with heavy lightening
crashes for about the first four hours of my operating time. My noise
floor was also higher thank it has been, for the past
couple of weeks. Most stations stations worked (all
S&P) in first 4 hours, were all within about 1,600Km and mostly east cost.
Only have a Shortened half sloper (W8AMZ) up at 35' apex, on small neighborhood
lot. One in the same antenna for TX and RX. Finally
after midnight the constant lightening crashes seemed to subside and the noise
floor dropped about 10DB, and I was able to hear a whole new layer of signals.
Finally found, heard and worked my first west coast station, K7RAT, just after
midnight. Thanks for your patience in getting my exchange! After that Q, more
west coast started popping into my RX. Worked a half dozen 9 pointers to the
west before that path weakened. Even worked two DX 12
pointers, KV4FZ, and NP2X, both with booming signals. Although, I had to
give a few repeats their way. Really appreciate their patience as well! Hoping
for a clean log this time around with no busted calls or exchanges, please!
Even with horrible noisy band conditions at my start, I had a great time. CU all next year. Operating conditions,
K3S 100 watts to a shortened half sloper (W8AMZ) apex at 35' sloping to 2' off

Guaranteed fun despite low
activity - how can this fun contest possibly attract more participants? CTWIN
wouldn't key the transmitter after installation of a new motherboard (with
parallel port via a PCI slot). CTWIN was
looking for a legacy 0x378 port; a helpful, knowledgeable ham made changes to

We used an 18m Spiderpole TX antenna, base loaded with 16 radials (ranging
from 20m - 40m length). The height of the antenna equals about 54 feet high.
Perhaps this make us eligible for the plaque sponsored by AA6VB: Top Score,
Base Loaded Vertical < 60 feet tall? Also perhaps we are eligible for the
W2GD Team sponsored plaque: Top # QSOs NA + SA by EU station? All winter season
antennas (160m vertical, beverages and K9AY) had been setup by Aurelio PC5A and
myself in the last couple of weeks so we were timely
ready to go. Oh ... well ... except for that 3dB splitter to for feeding the RX
antennas to both transceivers. Luckily that was fixed in about 5 minutes ... To
give the contest a little more difficulty we decided to go for low power. If
that would really spoil the fun and make QSO's rates comparable to an SHF
contest, we could still during the power increase power. Target QSO's was set
just above
last year’s number:
300 ... although we were high power last year. So we started and the first
hours seem to go well 'local'... hourly QSO rate stayed above last year’s
rates. Unfortunately no DX from the east was heard (VK, HS, BY, JA etc...). The
first highlight came around midnight when we heard Dietmar
V55V CQing!! He was perfectly audible on our 300m
long 165? Beverage and sometimes peaked S2. Although we only had low power, he
heard us at the first or second call! WOW! ... our ODX
until that moment with 8.110 km! Excellent ears he must have! We listened to
him for some minutes and he just kept calling CQ but worked almost nobody.
Unfortunately, no other DX heard from Africa or South-America. Further on we
heard NP2X from the Caribbean but he couldn't hear us. Then we heard N5IA in
DM52! That would be a new ODX with 8778 km ... but then again we were
remembered that we were only using 100W. We had to call him for a looooong time before even getting a QRZ or a 6M? ... Since
we were this far into the contest, switching to high power class was a no go
... so patience patience patience
and fingers crossing that he hears us during a QSB peak ... but in the end we
did make the QSO We heard many other W/VE stations that were LOUD but who
couldn't hear us although we extensively called them. During sunrise we counted
about 10-15 USA station that were really loud but just couldn't hear us...
which then also lowers the QSO rate substantially. We noticed no strong sunrise
peak with conditions to the West Coast. Anyway, we ended the contest with 289
QSO's (27 W's, 3 VE's) and although we didn't reach our target, this is still
slightly more QSO's than last year. So we are satisfied with the result ... and
it's the fun that counts Station description ... just as last year: - IC7800 +

other assistance ... which makes you realize how difficult it then is to search
for weak DX stations ... and actually turn that VFO knob on your TRX Thanks all

Splendid contest, but cndx was not super. - OU2V
Field-day
setup at a remote farm, two call-signs sharing a single antenna. We decided to test a combination of our (ex-DDR/Y22)
multi-segment Dural mast with a 15m DJ6NI glass fiber
pole. The Dural mast was built and guyed to a height of 10m, taking several
hours of the day. The 15m heavy-duty-5mm thick wall glass fiber mast was
mounted along the outside, seated on the lower gin-pole mast-clip-on-guy-wheel.
Fully extended, the fiber mast would swing
violently on the
typical farm-QTH winds, so we lowered the top section partly, closing the top
guying points closer making it stronger. At 23m AGL we had mounted a bifilar
Un-Un on a K-toroid and two dipole legs ending at 9m
height using separate support poles (making it an Inverted-Vee).
Two starting lengths of 42m each tuned XC=0 at 1672 KHz for sure. Several cuts
of 3m30 total at each leg would bring it up to 1822. Why not a vertical or
inverted L? Well, we are in
*experimenting mode* for the Dutch Young Lady Contesters (PI4YLC), preparing
for their next RDX contest in March. Since our former club station PI4TUE (University
of Technology Eindhoven) went QRT, we decided to do something else for a couple
of years. Ham Radio contesting is both about FUN and 'getting better at it'.
That second one requires not only operating skills but doing a lot of hardware
testing for optimization of the station. Since team-dynamics define that you
have members which rather design & built than actually operate,
they have their share
of fun (and challenges) too. For PI4YLC the next step-up challenge is adding a
Multiplier station, both in and out-band. Rens,
PA3FGA(our design-tech) arranged a second Elecraft K3, a KPA500+KAT500, some
4O3A hardware and built some additional switching stuff to make a two-station
setup with interlock features, sharing one amp +ATU to a single TX antenna. In
just two months that is. We had decided just recently to participate in the
Stew with two different stations to test/debug this. PI4YLC using their own full
station setup and PA5MW at the second full setup. It was just a simple
matter of running separate N1MM+ logs with no network connection. And a very
long table to ensure ones own single station setup.
The QTH holds a 20ft RX vertical in the woods, tuned for 160m and used as a
remote RX in a very past. That needed some servicing 'attention' being some
60Hz offset, which IS a big deal for such a short antenna. The ground post was
dug up and the four radials cleaned and re-connected. The pole must have been
totally oxidized as the Rs would not drop below 150 Ohms. Something for next
time as it was getting dark and we were using flashlights in the woods. A full
K9AY antenna setup was pre-arranged, but since we now had arrived in total
darkness already it had to be abandoned. Another result of
this enthusiastic last-minute planning. Initially we would go only for a
3x SDR receiving setup, recording the SP from different RX antennas and compare
it later at home. The shack needed a zillion cables for the interlocking, dual
station TX setup and sharing the local RX antenna + front-end protection
switching. After debugging one single cable the whole setup worked fabulous! At
our start it was already evening, 2 hours in the contest. Missed VK6VZ which
was earlier heard loud, but we had no TX yet. During the contest PI4YLC
(operated by Chantal PA5YL) and PA5MW (me) took shifts in operating full running
our station vs S&P, were we would do the
old-fashioned hand gesture if we would find a station on the band to work. In
the few seconds RX time between CQ's there was some time to listen and find the
next station. Surely not a preferredwinning
station setup, but still an ideal opportunity to do the much needed hardware
testing. Congratulations to our tech Rens/PA3FGA
as it worked flawlessly! I used diversity RX between the low TX dipole and the
small tuned RX antenna on the K3 which worked very well once both were proper
balanced on the K3. Highlights of the contest (PA5MW log only): a first hour 60
Q's and second 53 Q's. Max 10min rate 162, first USA: W1UE at 21:32, in total
16 US stations wkd, another 6 hrd.
Low-lights; condx not very good as
we missed many Asian/JA and the VK6 just before my start. Due to the
spent energy building the whole station on boxing day,
I had to quit at 05:26 UTC and fell asleep instantly for an hour or so.
Chantal, operating the second station as PI4YLC, used
those left morning hours to her best with some fine runs. She had started some two hours later than me
the day before and almost caught up with me. Final score PI4YLC 178 QSO's vs
PA5MW 209 QSO's. A nice result, sharing an inverted Vee TX antenna on Topband. The remaining day was
needed to disassemble the whole station and antenna, transport stuff home, eat
'something warm' and after a shower drop in bed to sleep 13.5 hrs in one stint.
All in all a very successful weekend this first ever Stew
Perry. I am sure in the future Christmas days will never be the same
again. 73 Mark, PA5MW Antenna TX: Inverted Vee @23m

BELDAR L1AR AWARD OR LIVE WIRE 9'S AWARD Candidate? Lost all my wire antennas a week or so ago due to a
wicked ice storm, so son and I installed a temp inverted L in a tree at high
noon on Christmas day. Judging by it's performance, I
think it might a keeper ! The weather here has been
crazy. One week it's snowing with 6-8" of snow , then freezing rain
knocking out power far and wide; the next it's Xmas day with 10* and sunshine.
We wore hoodies & sunglasses and worked
outside with no hats, gloves or even Canadian toques !
Well, I shopped around pretty hard on 3830 for a category to steal after I saw
a lot of the scores, but seems like all the good ones were taken, so I am doing
what I always do and just post in the category I was REALLY in. (readers of
CQ-CONTEST will know what that T-I-C comment is about, hi )
Well, with my live wire installed I got on for our sunset. Did manage to squeak
out 3 EU q's with very understanding QSO partners,
but then it all went south from there. Took a few hours (too many hours!) off
to have supper and watch TV with the family when I should've been making
contacts but got back on around 10pm local. Band was only so-so, but noise
wasn't too bad. Felt I left very very few hanging. A
cursory visual scan of the log looks like I worked about 104 EU's and several Caribbean DX. At one point it seemed like I was
working 2 EU's for every W8. Not many W5, 6 or 7's in the log and no VE6/7 or
Hawaii strangely enough, though I did go to bed @ 4am local and when I awoke an
hour and a bit before SR, the ground was covered with this thick white stuff
and the low noise level I had enjoyed for many hours 'the nite
before' was gone and there was a nasty snow static that made copying even W3's
a big chore. Many CQ's and trips up and down this group of Stew Perry
frequencies netted about 7 Q's in an hour, so with some darkness remaining, the
knife switch was open and it was over. Thanks to all for listening to my wee
signal on the wire and my strange stories over the years. 73

Again, this year signals
were poor to North America and Europe and nothing heard from Africa or Central
- South America, but at least my noise - QRN was low, which made it bearable.
So I look forward to the next Stew Perry DX challenge, when maybe I will have a
better antenna system and the ionosphere - weather will kind to me. 73's to all and thank you for calling me and the successful QSO's.

In looking at the Stew Perry preliminary results, I
noticed right away that my "BEST DX" (N5IA) was also the Best DX
for MANY other stations. Which makes it pretty reasonable to
assert that N5IA has REALLY GOOD EARS. Which made me
realize that the calls that appear most frequently in the "BEST
DX" column should all get recognized for having the best ears. So I hereby suggest to the sponsors that in
the official results, you publish a top 5 or top 10
list for BEST EARS, as determined by the criteria above. And congrats and thanks to N5IA for hearing my puny 100W and very
lazy inverted-L. 73 – John W2ID

Worst ever 160 winter QRN when I got on at about a quarter to eight, local
time--crashes peaking +50db/9. To protect the receiver input against nearby
lightning, I switched to a beverage, with a 47 ohm series resistor followed by
back-to-back diodes. As the night wore on, the noise subsided, but frequent crashes
made it difficult to copy a weak signal. Under such conditions, S L O W sending
