The 21st running of the Stew Perry Topband Distance Challenge was held on December 17th and 18th, 2016. 876 logs were submitted, another year-to-year increase in the number of logs submitted and an all time high. There were over 1700 stations active with just over 1000 from North American and another 550 from Europe. Conditions were average – but not excellent. Hopefully as the sunspots continue to diminish, some of the stellar conditions that we have enjoyed in years past will grace us all. The distance based scoring method continues to shine and give us results that seem to enable competitive scores from most places in the world. We have seen the ARRL adopt this scoring method for their new VHF/UHF contest and there is also an RTTY contest sponsored by a coax connector club that has adopted it as well.
The Boring Amateur Radio Club would like to acknowledge the efforts of Earl, K6SE, who back 20 years ago helped the log checking software development team come up with the most accurate algorithm for determing the distance between grid squares. One option is to ignore the actual dimensions of the Earth and assume it is a perfect sphere. While this makes the math much easier to deal with – the method Earl helped us with takes into account the deformation of the Earth due to gravity and the Earth’s spin to more accurately compute the appropriate QSO points for each QSO. Does this make any difference in the order of finish? Probably not… but it feels warm and fuzzy knowing that the contributions that Earl made before his death are still being leveraged four times a year to create the results. It was something he was highly motivated to help with. The same algorithm is being used by the ARRL for their contest.
A total of 30 plaques were sponsored for this event. The enthusiasm surrounding the plaque program is a significant contributor to the activity level. The day is coming when we will have sent out the 1000th plaque – which might be something that only the ARRL or CQ can top. The plaque program would not be possible without those of YOU who sponsor the plaques and support the effort. Without these funds, the plaque program would not exist. Another significant contribution by YOU is the fresh ideas for plaques that spur the imagination of the participants and encourage their activity. The best way to help keep this contest growing is for YOU to sponsor a plaque for the next Stew.
To help make it easy to match up your score to the available plaques – please clearly indicate which plaques you feel you qualify for in the soapbox portion of your log. The hardest part of administering the plaque program is reading your mind to determine if you were running a temporary non-resonant wire, less than 30 feet high, shaped in the letter “W” when viewed from the air and at least two of the legs are used as a dog run. If you feel the wrong plaque was awarded for a category you were qualified for – you have a few days after this was posted to raise the issue. Otherwise, the plaque list is final and sent to the plaque guy for creation. We hope to get the plaques all delievery before the 22nd running of this contest.
Once again – preminary scores were posted on the internet daily as more logs were submitted. We had over 300 logs submitted the very day that the contest ended. Many of you kept an eye on your score as bonus credit was given for the low power and QRP stations that you worked. Most scores saw an increase around 15-20 percent as a result. On the negative side of this practice – we had one competitive station notice they had a significant number of busted QSOs in their log – and they started sending updates to their log attempting to fix some of the errors in the log. This practice appeared to be using a callbook or similar data source for obtaining grid squares. While some of the received grid errors were indeed corrected, other stations who operated from a grid square different from the one shown on QRZ.COM ended up with the wrong grid square in the edited log. This really is not how the game should be played. After careful consideration, the BARC log checking team decided to just use the first log that was submitted and give the entrant a stern warning to not repeat this behavior.
Next Time
Due to the way Christmas and New Year’s fall in 2017, the event will jump back into the week between Christmas and New Year’s. There is some debate about whether having the event before or after December 25th is better. In 2016 – we did indeed have a recorded number of log submissions. However, the total was not significantly different than the previous year when the event was held on Dec 26/27. The difference is similar to the year-to-year growth we have seen in log submissions. The Boring ARC has decided to stick to the previous decision and use the same dates as in 2006 when New Year’s Day fell on Monday. In that event, the contest was held on Dec 30/31st and we had an increase of over 100 log submissions from the 2005 event. We realize that this decision will mean some of you won’t be able to participate full time in the event, but there are probably an equal number of people who have the opposite result.

Due to family holiday commitments I was only able to operate for a few minutes. I fired up my remote station and made four QSOs. It's always fun to at least dabble in the SPDXC. Conditions seemed remarkably good from California. I worked NP2X and KV4FZ easily with 100 watts. - AJ6T
Greetings to all ! Used FT-817 power set at 5 watts to a 240 ft long wire antenna strung in the birch trees. Operated my QRP station for a total of 6 hours. I did not receive any electronic or human assistance during this event. No 1-800 psychic's were contacted before, during or after the event. No stamina/performance pills consumed, no gene splicing or Lance Armstrong style blood transfusions to give unauthorized advantage. Moved to a new QTH (Munich) a few weeks ago and participated as a little-pistol-station for the first time ever. Saturday was spent with setting up the TX-Antenna (18m / 59ft vertical with loading inductor and hairpin match), 16 radials and a magnetic loop as receiving antenna. I have no fixed station neither property yet, but I got permission to use the arbor of a working colleague in a small city lot. I used my vintage equipment (TS-850s and external power supply) and low power.The first night was a bit disappointing as I heard only two JA but neither of them heard my tiny signal. I swore I'll never work LP again! Since the arbor had no heating I wore 3 layers of clothes including a wollen hat and a scarf. Around one I slept for 4 hours and was even tempted to stay in my sleeping bag since LP from a big city (1.6 mio) is no fun at all. But when I returned to the radio I was surprised - KU1CW was real 579 and heard my signal on the first call. What a great restart! At the end I managed to work more than 30 stations from outside Europe. I heard many more, especially from west coast and caribbean, but my signal was too weak. At the end it was great fun and I might qualify for the following plaques: - Top Score Big City >50K, Little Pistol <100W - Top Score Base Loaded Vertical < 60' tall though I don't believe it's a Top Score. I have been paticipated on this contest since the first time. I paticipated on LowPower SingleOp. The condition was litte better than the last year. I used tranceiver 'K2 & K3 & FT1000D' on this contest. I use a K2 for watch a very weak singal. I use a k3 for a weak signal in the very heavy QRM. I use a FT1000D for a speed watch. I use my Micro Vert Antenna which length only 3.6meters. I built it on my balcony 2m*10m space of my condminiam. I set the transmiting speed of my electronics keyer upper 20 wpm. My first SP Contest. Lot of fun. Worked all four corners of continential US. What other band lets you do that?! - K2JB
K3CCR is the club station at the Collington continuing-care retirement community at FM 18OW in MD, just east of DC. For the Dec. 2016 Stew Perry only I (N3UM) was available; I went SOHP. Propagation was excellent; K index had been low for days. Got 541 points in the first 4 hr., 58 Qs/hr and 135 points/hr avg. Six EUs answered my CQs; an EI at 2221, then an E7, 2 DLs, and an OK 23-00Z, and a 2nd EI at 0053Z. I kept CQing for 15 min. after the 4th hr. ended at 0106Z, but my rate dropped abruptly, 8 Qs in 15 min, 32/hr., so I went to tune and pounce. Rate was steady but slow; 76 Qs and 216 points in 3.1 hrs. 0106-0412Z for 25 Qs/hr and 71 points/hr avg. Got 2 EUs in that 3.1 hrs, near 03Z. Much more fun after 0413Z; ran again for 1/2 hr; 7 EUs and 11 others answered CQs, then I tuned. Only 24 Qs 04-05Z but 144 points, 3rd-best hr. of the test. Next hour 05-06Z was best by far; only 29 Qs but 246 points, 177 from 13 EU Qs and 52 from W. coast K/VE and other NA. Then I got 3 more EU Qs and 2 US for 44 points 0600-0608. After 0608 heard no EUs, and all W/K and VE were dupes, so QRT to sleep. I claimed 1186 points, 439 more than the 747 points I got in 2015 at K3CCR. Why? Because I got 31 EU Qs this year for 418 points plus 119 points from W.-coast Qs, vs only 7 EU Qs and NO W.-coast Qs in 2015. Some of this was the amazing propagation, but I think improving our T antenna this year, ~75 vs 50 ft. high with more radials, also helped. - K3CCR

Only had an hour to work the SP due to holiday/family obligations. Earlier in the day, I strung out 90 feet of wire and attached it to EARCHI end-fed balun that was given to me by my good friend KA4RUR. It loads up nicely with the LDG AT-100 tuner and being only 20 feet off the ground, the NVIS effect allows solid coverage out to about 500 miles. It's not a DX magnet, but I can make QSOs relatively easily with CW and JT65A. Total power out was about 4W from the FT-817ND here. Propagtion wasn't great and there were a few QSOs that I lost due to QSB. There would have been more Qs if I had more time. Still, this being my first foray into a 160M contest, I had a great time! I'm looking forward to more Top Band adventures. Thanks again for a great contest in remembrance of a true pioneer. - KB2HSH

I humbly request consideration for the Golden Log award. My numbers may not be that high but maybe I could get lucky if others were sloppy. Regrettably, I had limited time to operate. However, these may have been the best conditions I've ever heard on 160m during a contest. Looking over my log from last year, I not only had fewer Qs, I also worked very little west of The Big Muddy. Earlier in the week I tried and failed to work N7QT on the top band. When he called me early on Sunday morning, while I was 'running' I had to check my ears. Thanks for the long grid Bob. Two weeks ago during that other 160m contest, I did not hear nor work a single European station. I struggled to work Texas and heard almost nothing from my brothers on the left coast. This year, EU was as easy as AZ, NM, CO, etc. Even in pileups. I worked 10 European stations total and had 3 of them call me while I CQ'd. I Also worked a bunch of west coast grids. Not bad for 100W and an inverted L from NJ-FN20. - KE2D

I can pretend for 2 plaques at once :) Friday afternoon I spent all day outside and new 160m antenna was made. It's temporary base loaded vertical exactly 17m high with wide (1m) diameter coil of 20mm diameter wire to get full 1/4 wl vertical. Add 10 radials to this antenna. SWR was good enough 1810-1845 for operation 1:1.7 max. So added few more radials and leave this ant till evening to test in Russian 160m contest. During this event this vertical shows good result. Receiving was much better than previous INV L - noise level was much lower. This antenna will stay till it die. It means nobody knows when my wife will cut radials because my garden seems funny with a lot of wires around property. I pray for snowing it is only opportunity to hide radials with hope my wife will not found it till Spring. And I will be able to work some new countries on TOP BAND during winter season. Also hope for CQ WW 160... But who knows. It is the only antenna for 160m now at my QTH. TNX QSO's. MX and HNY! - LY7Z
Felt like the Le Mans 24 hour marathon.... Radio #1 TS950SD lost an RF transistor about 3 hours after the start, and was operating at about half power so transitioned to Radio #2 TS940S which shortly after switching on - I saw smoke! Switched off and found a bridge rectifier had failed gone short circuit. A hot soldering iron and 4 x 1N5404 diodes later, the radio lived again and I was able to finish the contest... - M0BTZ

Overall another great Stew Perry. I love this contest. Improved over last year's score. I was surprised how much thunderstorm QRN there was Saturday evening. I guess it's not below zero everywhere. Having trouble working W6 this year. May need to reconfigure Inv-L into a Tee. Never had time to re-install my homebrew SAL-30 this year. I erected two 20 ft vertical with YCCC preamplifiers. I used them with an old MFJ-1025 phasing unit to null out what sounds like a plasma TV. Worked pretty well. - N9SE
Thanksto the Boring Amateur Radio Club for sponsoring a fun contest. It was also great to be able to work K7RAT and W7ew from my tiny city lot and low hanging (35') short (67') loaded wire antenna and 100 watts. Coditions early Saturday night, noisy and static crashes. Prop decent to west Lower 48 for a change. Never heard any DX except for Caribbean. Logged 24 more Q's than last year, and improved grid count by 22 from last year to 95 grids, and more 9 pointers. Will be curious to see results from log checking. QSB and static crashes may have aided in a few busted grid exchanges. Always lots of fun to play. Played just a little bit: 1 hour Saturday night and 1/2 hour Sunday morning. Tough sledding with 5 watts to a low 80m dipole tuned for 160! Lots of requests for repeats! Thanks for everybody's patience. - ND0C
Temporary antennas: End Fed half wave sloper facing Northeast and a shortened veritcal as a back up as the thin wire has a tendency to melt when CQin too long. Luckily the frost warnings came true and the thin wire managed to maintain thermal equilibrium above the melting point of copper and did not set any citrus on fire. The shortend vertical had to be taken down before sunrise to avoid the wrath of the HOA, so it is automatically disqualified from Dr. B's temporatry antenna award; however the thin wired end-fed continues in it's "temporary" well hidden position! - NG7A
Disconnected the shield for the coax used to feed my wire laying on the roof. The LDG tuner was able to tune the antenna...Always fun to play on 160! - NM5M
** CHECK LOG ONLY ** ** CHECK LOG ONLY ** I failed to remind myself of Rule 6, and until advised of it, was actively spotting DX. That said, while I understand the intent of Rule 6, I have to wonder if disallowing the use of spotting is in the best interest of the contest. WWSD? Given his Top Band newsletters, and his overall zeal for working new DX on TB, I think he's be a big user of it. Given the nature of the 'test - which is to try to optimize long-distance QSO's, I believe that spotting would assist with allowing DX to establish a toe-hold on a frequency on the other end. For example, I certainly don't have one of the best RX antenna setups - not by a longshot. Having said that, my 700' NE Beverage does pretty well, and it ridiculously common to hear a W5/W8/W9 sitting on the same QRG as a European station, both calling CQ. Obviously, they can't hear the DX, but they are hearing the U.S. quite well, and so happily work those low-point QSO, while unknowingly preventing the rest of us from working the DX station. I hear this on TB in every single contest which allows U.S. to U.S. or U.S. to North America-type QSOs: It turns it into a North America QSO Party, which is very sad. I'd imagine it's similar in Europe, with locals blocking DX. I'd suggest a re-consideration of Rule 6. - NN4X
On top to the 'LOW POWER' category, please additional antenna efficiency - like I only have Butternut in city lot, the efficiency is probably 10% or less - HI. Season's greetings. - NN5T
Many US signals with sporadic heavy QRN. I was constantly tuning the NCC-1 to steer the active receive array away from the noise, and that worked to a large extent except when it took out the station of interest as well as the noise! I only heard just 3 or 4 stations not in the US, though I could hear the east coast working EU. A couple of JAs turned up before sunrise here, but though I could hear them they could not hear me. I was so tired that I actually worked a couple of stations on a dummy load! This was right after I got back up Sunday morning after 4-5 hours sleep. I guess I was still asleep. I AM 20 YEARS OLD. Born in 1996. I really want to get a plaque and baseball cap))) Top Score, S/O, <21Y/O, > 200 QSOs I worked 14 hours. I worked from 15 to 5z. OFF-TIME from 00:49 - 01:30 202 QSO were observed with difficulty, but it was interesting. I have worked with Yaesu FT-920, InvL antenna and 220m BV for Europe. Hard game with 100w and only the Vertical as tx/rx this time! No time to put up beverage so 100w was enought! I was surprised how i could receive on this Antenna! I had time to time att 6/12db or boths on TS850! Being close to city center gave s6 to more noise so ... Conditions were better than arrl 160 for sure! The first evening here in VK3 and probably in all of VK was a wipeout with very strong QRN from storms in VK4 and so no qso's were possible. On my sunrise, the QRN was still very and I could only copy 4 stations from Europe and again no qso's were had. On my next evening, conditions in VK3 were surprisingly better and with strong signals from USA and Japan, I finally ended up with a good number of qso's. Thank you for all who gave me a cal and for those who tried so hard to get my call. - VK3IO
Thunderstorms out on the coast made this SP 'hard yakka' and conditions were flakier than a chocolate antenna in the Sun. Thus relatively few signals heard and these were buried in the static crashes, but I still had fun pulling 'em out, especially 9M2/JE1SCJ! Some QSOs took around 5 minutes. Congrats to Tree and Lew for running what is the best 160m contest in the calendar. See ya all next year. - VK6VZ

It was my first Big Stew Contest, though I had wished to work atleast one U.S station as I heard W3LL in Prestew. 160M band is totally different and difficult here in this part of the world but it was great fun to hear many station as I have never heard much on 160m band. - VU3DMP

My first Stew Perry -- good fun! Though I heard several EU, could work only one. It's clear that my dipole at ~45' just does not do it, even with my downhill to the NE. Added capacitor and inductance to antenna tuner to better load my cage umbrella vertical. Some time before 0100 z, the added capacitor began arcing, so had to canibalize the cap from my 30 meter half-wave GP tuner in its place. Imporived match resulted in more plate current, and alas, at 1041, the overheated H.V. transformer, which had the unmistakable aroma of hot oil, finally gave up the ghost, so I called it a "night" (4:41 am cst). WORD TO THE WISE: Sending slower would better get through the QRN. - W9JEF

1st time Stew Perry, Put up antenna 12/18/2016, I added a 30' fiberglass pole to the top of my 35' tower (duct tape) with wire alongside and loaded about half way at top of the tower, below the 3el beam. Marginal, but made contacts. Thanks for everyones patience with the weak signal. - WT5RZ
