Colleagues:

As we live in a 'scanning society' where emails and letters are quickly scanned and details often lost or missed, I have taken time to review Mike's points and measure them against my recollection and actual record; and I find his points frightening and yet reality.

To remove a colleague from our midst is an action that should be taken very seriously and not in a caviler manner. This could be the most serious decision of your career as a Board Member; please consider the best action for the ARRL, not your personal friendships, campaigns or election. Sometimes, the difficult decision can have repercussions that are not seen ahead of times or welcome when they arrive, but are the correct decision.

"Justice, Justice, do only Justice" - a quote that has driven me for many years. But what I have learned, is that doing 'justice' does not always sustain my personal opinion or position. This is something we all have to face tomorrow night.

Yes, Mike is correct; we have a very toxic environment, regardless of how it got started or how it was brought forward. If we truly want the hallmark of Amateur Radio (The ARRL) to survive, and the legacy of our Founders to prevail, we must eliminate that environment and restore one where we may not always agree, but will work for compromise and find consensus. That is the true task of any Board of Directors!

You all know me; I've always tried to find a peaceful solution to matters. But this time I am stumped! I even tried to find some solutions over this past weekend, but I failed. Now it is up to all of us to ask the questions: 1) do we acknowledge that there is a toxic work environment in the Board Room that is filtering down to Staff? 2) Do we want to retain our (in my opinion) excellent CEO and GC? 3) are we willing to put the League first an out personal titles as Directors second? (That one could easily impact an election and as Mike said "takes a pair of big brass ones".

It's up to us. 15 people can decide the future of the ARRL tomorrow evening; or 1 person can decide the future of same. I truly hate to be put in this position, but it is part of my job and yours - to set the policy and to guide the future.

Again, I am at a loss for a solution that would be less impacting. I'm not certain there is one.

73, Jim
